We’re excited to present this truly special coffee from acclaimed producers Arcesio Oino Pancho and his wife, Yina Cuchumbe, at Finca Bella Vista. This lot offers the chance to experience one of coffee’s most fascinating cultivars: Maragogype, a rare mutation of Typica first identified as far back as 1870.
Arcesio’s journey in coffee is one of dedication and determination. Beginning as a coffee picker, he saved for years to purchase a small plot of land and pursue his dream of becoming a producer. After 26 years selling into the commodity market, the family now accesses premium prices on the specialty market—a testament to their unwavering commitment to quality.
Spanning 8 hectares at an altitude of 1,950 metres in Páez, Cauca, just 1.6 hectares are planted with coffee. The entire family contributes to farm work, from pruning and feeding the trees to selective picking and managing post-harvest protocols with meticulous care.
Maragogype is prized for its striking physical traits—very large leaves, wider internodal spacing, and oversized cherries that yield large seeds. While celebrated for exceptional cup quality, it’s also challenging: lower productivity and the need for more space make it less commercially attractive, and the larger cherries can require depulpers to be recalibrated to avoid bruising or cracking the seed.
After harvest, the cherries are carefully depulped before undergoing traditional fermentation and washing, then slowly dried on raised mesh beds to preserve the cultivar’s distinctive character.
Expect a bright, complex cup with lingering sweetness, featuring vibrant notes of membrillo, zesty lime, and beautiful floral aromatics with a juicy finish.
