To celebrate the Chinese New Year, we’re showcasing a coffee from Banka in Yunnan, one of China’s most exciting emerging origins. Managed by Yunnan Coffee Traders, the farm and washing station sits at 1,350 metres and benefits from a subtropical climate ideal for cultivation. Ripe Catimor cherries are sourced from nearby smallholders and processed using washed and natural methods. With innovations like yeast fermentation and optical sorting, Banka reflects a commitment to quality and sustainability. The result is a sweet, fruity, and balanced cup — a perfect way to mark the season and explore something truly unique.
The Banka farm is located in the Menglian Dai, Lahu, and Va Autonomous County of Yunnan Province, near the villages of Banka Yi and Banka Er. It spans roughly 100 hectares of coffee-growing land and benefits from a climate with distinct wet and dry seasons — ideal for high-quality cultivation.
The main varietal grown is Catimor (P3/P4), selected for its disease resistance and suitability to the region. Yunnan Coffee Traders supports nearby smallholder farmers with technical guidance, fair pricing, and a strong focus on traceability.
Processing at Banka is among the most advanced in the region, featuring modern equipment like optical sorters and a strong emphasis on selective harvesting. Experimentation with new varietals such as Pacamara and Yellow Bourbon, alongside fermentation techniques, reflects a growing movement toward quality-driven innovation in China’s specialty coffee scene.
